Our Auctioneer for the evening
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers and a familiar face on television, is a man thousands of antiques fans have come to know and love.
People travel from far and wide – including China, Canada and Australia – to visit his Derbyshire saleroom just to say hello.
He regularly appears on TV shows like Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip but, though he enjoys the TV work, his first love will always be the saleroom.
He thrives on the drama, passion and excitement of an auction. As well as leading sales at his auction centres in Derbyshire, London and Staffordshire, he often uses his talents to aid major charity auctions around the UK.
Charles’ passion for history and antiques emerged when he was a boy. At the age of eight, he took up metal detecting. One of his earliest finds was a Charles I coin. He still recalls the excitement he felt when he discovered it.
His working life began at Christie’s in London. He went on to launch Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire, in 2005. His expanded his business in 2018 with the launch of Hansons London and in 2019 opened a new country house showroom at Staffordshire Georgian mansion Bishton Hall.
Over the years exciting finds – and sales – have come thick and fast, sparking media interest all over the world.
Charles has sold everything from Queen Victoria’s Bloomers for £4,500 to an original Harry Corbett Sooty puppet for a record-breaking £14,000.
Then there was the Chinese plate found in a kitchen cupboard which had an exact replica in the National Museum of China. It sold for £230,000.
Hansons London uncovered two Faberge flowers which made £400,000 and at Bishton Hall a Harry Potter first edition reached £28,500.
Away from the saleroom, Charles is a passionate supporter of charities. For him, it is an absolute privilege to bring the art of auctioneering to important fundraising events to benefit good causes. Over the years, he has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for countless charities.
Once again we are delighted to be joined by, Ashley Goodchild of GC Events. This will be the 10th year that Ash has been with Maria, not only our DJ for the evening but he also takes care of all of the lighting and sound for the evening.
