Who are me&dee?
me&dee charity is a registered charity and was formed to create special moments and memories to both children and adults who have a life threatening, life shortening or terminal conditions.
Maria Hanson MBE, our founder and CEO, wanted to prove that a simple holiday could provide a place where the families could share precious time. For the last seven years me&dee have provided memory holidays at the seaside in Mablethorpe on the beautiful Lincolnshire coast by way of two lovely spacious caravans based on the Grange Leisure Park.
A time to change
During 2019 we found that many of our families have been unable to enjoy a full week at the caravans in Mablethorpe. These are often young parents with limited time left or they have a child that is extremely poorly. As many of our families are Midlands based, 200-mile round trips from home are extremely demanding and often they need to return home early for treatment, palliative care or, sadly to die.
For some time, Maria and Mark have been thinking of an alternative solution to the way the charity provides our memory holidays. So, a plan was formed with the Trustees to make sure that families could have a facility with less traveling time, easy access to the M1 corridor, for quick and easy ways to get back to their home or hospital if required to do so.
After visiting sites in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire they have found a place to locate a new holiday home, a lodge, that will be sited at Sherwood Hideaway, a place within Sherwood Forest on the Derby/Nottingham border.
Our 20/20 Vision Project
In July 2019 an appeal was launched to raise funds to purchase a lodge, our Forever Home, by way of people buying squares, (Buy a brick scheme) and by Christmas 2019 the charity had raised an amazing £105,000, leaving £45,000 to raise.
The lodge has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large lounge, kitchen and utility room along with a very large decking area and hot tub.
The degree of comfort for families and for someone receiving palliative care and near end of life care is so much better than what the caravans could offer, with the size of the beds and size of the lodge along with the hot tub and the extremely peaceful spot tucked away in a clearing in the forest.
2020 a New Year a New Start
Once purchased the lodge will provide our families with somewhere to take a break from the routine of hospital visits, receiving treatment and the day too day routine that goes along with someone in the family being very poorly.
To those who meet our criteria we are able to offer, either a weekend or mid-week break, depending on what your circumstances may be.
Our holiday home is fully equipped with everything that people need for their break away and more besides. The lodge has quilts, pillows, mattress covers and bedding, the kitchen is fully equipped, all the families need to bring to the lodge is their own food and drink.
Every effort is made, that if necessary, we can accommodate respirators, kidney dialysis, carers and nurses and an exhaustive list to ensure this potentially last holiday has a high impact for our families.
me&dee and Mablethorpe
Over seven years Mablethorpe has been a place that me&dee called home and that certainly won’t change even though our holiday homes aren’t sited there anymore. It was such a hard decision to leave a place that had taken us to their hearts, raised money for us and had welcomed our families with open arms.
A big thank you to a special lady, Debbie Prince, who put so much time and effort in to helping and promoting me&dee. Thanks also, to each and every one of our Mablethorpe family, for holding our hand for the last seven years, you are truly wonderful people, each and everyone of you.
